The Cambridge Diet is a 1960s fad diet that consists of very-low-calorie meal replacements. In the United States and the United Kingdom, distinct variants of the diet were introduced. The Diet Cambridge Weight Plan was once known as the UK diet. Alan Howard of Cambridge University, England, first employed and created the Cambridge Diet in-hospital weight control programs. 

The Diet’s plan comes in six different stages. Step one, dubbed ‘Sole Source,’ requires dieters to eliminate all ‘regular’ daily foods in favor of Cambridge Weight Plan’s own-brand, low-calorie selection of items, as well as 2.5 liters of water. Later phases, such as step six, or ‘Maintenance,’ are more flexible, allowing certain nutritious foods to be interspersed with a few meal substitutes.
